HISTORY

Maureen is the youngest of the Oppermann girls and was born in Kennilworth Square.  She went to school in Presentation Convent, Terenure.  After leaving school she went to work in Cassidy’s Drapery Shop in Georges Street where she worked initially in the cash office, following which she was promoted to manager of the cash office.  As a young girl Maureen loved to walk, play tennis, go dancing and also enjoyed sewing she had a particular interest in embroidery.  She inherited the family culinary traits and was an excellent cook particularly in respect of baking.

Maureen met Joe Wall in 1943 and they married a number of years later on 2 December 1947.  Not long after their marriage Joe went to Canada due to the lack of employment opportunities which existed in Ireland at the time.  When Joe secured employment Maureen followed him to Toronto, Canada in 1948.

During her years in Canada in between raising her three children Carl, Elizabeth and Cathy, Maureen did a lot of voluntary work within the Hospital network.  Maureen and Joe bought a cottage on Lake Simcoe, North Ontario.  Maureen spent the summer holidays up at the lake with her children and was often visited there by her relations from Ireland.

In 1971 Maureen and Joe, who is a keen golfer, invested in the Oppermann Hotel and Country Club and came back to Ireland to live with their daughter Cathy.  When the hotel ceased trading they returned to live in Toronto.

As they had sold their home and tailoring business prior to going to Ireland in 1971, on their return to Toronto they had to start over again.    Joe secured a position in car sales at which he was very successful and they purchased a home in Willowdale, Toronto.

In July 1974 their daughter Elizabeth married Ron Krochack and in May 1986 their son Carl married Marilyn.
